Hurricane Update- Sunday 1pm

10/28/12

Hello. I am Hazlet Mayor Dave Tinker.  I wanted to take this opportunity to bring you up to speed on our community’s preparations in advance of Hurricane Sandy.  Before I get into any details, I want to impress upon you the importance of preparation.  NOW is the time to prepare supplies and a family emergency plan, including identifying a location far from Hazlet where you can stay with family or friends.

This morning, I attended a meeting of Hazlet’s senior emergency managers at town hall.  During this meeting, I was assured that our emergency services are as ready as they can be to respond to this dangerous storm.  Our Department of Public works has been diligently clearing streams and storm inlets to accommodate as much storm water as possible.  Our police, fire, first aid and emergency management staffs are ready and anxious to help any of our fellow residents who may need assistance.

We have declared a local state of emergency requiring everyone to prepare for the storm.  Residents living in low lying areas that are prone to flooding should voluntarily evacuate well in advance of the storm.  JCP&L is telling us to expect to be without power for as many as ten days following the storm.  You will be more comfortable somewhere else than in your own home.

You should be prepared with food, water, batteries and other staples and be ready to provide for your own family for several days.  Be sure to check on your elderly friends and family to ensure that they are well cared for.

Should you lose power, DO NOT call the Hazlet Police.  Instead, you should call JCP&L at 1-888-LIGHTS-S.  You should ONLY call the Hazlet Police in the event of actual emergency.  Police can be reached at 732-264-6565 or by dialing 9-1-1.

Finally, I can tell you that the Hazlet Township Public Schools have been declared closed for both Monday and Tuesday.  Town Hall will be open on a limited basis for emergency business both days.

I will keep you updated as new information becomes available.  In the meantime, listen to your local news outlets and follow us on our township website http://www.hazlettwp.org and on our facebook page at facebook.com/townshipofhazlet.

Until then, Good Luck and please stay safe.
