FIRE:

The Hazlet Township Fire District #1 was formed in 1985 and is comprised of the 3 Fire Companies which make up the Hazlet Township Fire Department (Hazlet Fire Company #1, North Centerville Vol. Fire Company #1 and the West Keansburg Fire Company) and the Bureau of Fire Prevention.

A Board of Fire Commissioners governs the Fire District. There are 5 members of the Board of Commissioners. The members are elected annually by the residents and serve a 3-year term. The Board of Commissioners are responsible for setting up and overseeing the Districts annual budget which is voted on by the residents at the District elections in February of each year. The Board sees that each Fire Company in the District has the needed equipment and training as required by the NJ State Division of Fire Safety and the NFPA.

The Board also oversees the operations of the Hazlet Township Bureau of Fire Prevention, which has a full time Fire Official and 2 part time secretaries. The Fire Official is responsible for inspecting all commercial and industrial buildings in the township for safety and life hazards and reporting these inspections to the State Division of Fire Safety. The Fire Official also investigates all fires in the township.

The Fire District holds monthly meetings that are open to the public. The meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 8:00pm at the North Centerville Firehouse, 372 Middle Road. The annual election for the Fire Commissioners and budget is held in February each year. Currently the set-up of the Board is:

The Firematic operations of each of the Hazlet Fire Companies are run by the respective Fire Company's Chief and their Officers. The Chief and Officers are responsible for all firematic equipment purchased by the District. They are responsible to see that all members have the required training. The Chiefs and/or Officers are responsible for all firematic operations at the scene of any fire. The Chiefs normally serve a 3-year term - 2nd Assistant, 1st Assistant and Township Chief.

The day to day operations of the Fire Companies are run by the President and Executive Officers of each company. All Hazlet Township Fire Companies are Volunteer. New members are always needed. Requirements to become a member are:

• Must be between 18 and 46 years of age.
• Must pass a physical provided by the District.
• Must pass training and become Firefighter I certified.
• Must complete all other required training.
• Must adhere to all other rules and regulations of the respective Fire Company.
