| TRAFFIC SAFETY: |
INTRODUCTION
The main objective of the police traffic safety division
is to enhance the safe and expeditious movement of traffic
and pedestrians throughout the township. This is achieved
through the three basic elements of traffic safety- engineering,
education and enforcement. The officers assigned to this unit
are specially trained in many aspects of traffic safety some
of which include, traffic crash investigation and reconstruction,
police traffic engineering, vehicle occupant protection, police
traffic control, and work zone safety.
PROGRAMS
Child Seat Inspection - Have your child passenger
safety equipment inspected by one of our two NHTSA certified
officers. Studies show that up to 90% of all child seats are
improperly installed. Inspections are by appointment only
and should take approximately 20 minutes per seat. Please
call the Traffic Safety Division at 732-264-6565 ext. 117
for an appointment.
Speed Monitoring Trailer - The traffic bureau is
pleased to announce the addition of a MPH Industries speed-monitoring
trailer. Studies find that most motorists do not realize they
are exceeding the speed limit. The trailer is designed to
remind motorists of the local speed limit and advise them
of their speed. It will be placed on a rotating basis in conjunction
with the departments RADAR speed enforcement program on streets
throughout the township. The trailer with its variable message
board can also be used to advise motorists in times of emergency
and for special events in the township.
DWI Patrol – The department through a grant provided by the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety has scheduled extra
patrols that focus on the apprehension of intoxicated drivers. Patrols are scheduled throughout the year with emphasis during
the holidays and other peak periods.
Go-Peds - Go-Peds are considered motorized vehicles under current motor vehicle regulations, therefore, they must be registered and insured and ridden by a licensed
driver. The State of New Jersey is in the process of passing new legislation specifically prohibiting the use of Go-Peds on any street or highway. Until that time, officers will
enforce the motorized vehicle laws currently listed in Title 39. Do not let your children ride Go-Peds on any street or highway. The Go-Ped will be impounded at
your expense and summonses may be issued
