Chris McManus is the new director of Hazlet Recreation. To many, he is already a familiar face around town.
As chairman of the volunteer Recreation Advisory Commission, he organized the township's hugely successful 2021 Bike with a Bunny parade on Middle Road for township kids and Drive-In Movies at Veterans Park. As president of the volunteer Library Commission, he has overseen popular outdoor book sales that raised money for library improvements. He organized Hazlet Day from 2014 to 2018. Since 2013 he's held several paid positions with Hazlet Recreation, as camp counselor, office assistant and swim club activities director. McManus has also gained experience with Middletown and Keyport Recreation departments. In 2019, he graduated Kean University with a bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration.
"I am excited to be director of Recreation in my own hometown," said McManus. "As we come out of the pandemic, everyone is looking forward to getting out, getting exercise, and reuniting with friends. I can't wait to get started."
The Township Committee gave McManus their unanimous vote at their May 18, 2021 meeting. "Chris has a great energy and creative ideas," said Mayor Tara Clark. "We love how he is focused on bringing relevant recreation programs to more corners of town. We look forward to seeing what he will bring to Hazlet residents."
